How my dog’s picky eating drove me to the breaking point, and I was terrified for her health.

I was her caregiver and I was failing her, or so it seemed. I have an 8 year old golden retriever named Betty.

I want to share my nightmarish experience of what happened last year with anyone that loves dogs. Thankfully we are doing so much better because of some simple changes.

But getting to this point was a bit of a nightmare scenario. I’ve had Betty since I adopted her from a shelter when she was three years old. It was her eyes and floofy fur that got me- how could I resist??

The previous family could not handle her energy and exercise needs, not to mention they failed at any type of training.

So it was my mission to care for Betty which meant she had to learn new boundaries and in return she was free to play and spend all of her kooky energy.

Betty is a smart girl and learned the new rules quickly. I followed the advice of the Ontario SPCA and any retriever specific websites I could find. Talk about info overload!

In the end, the key was being firm and consistent with Betty. Once it was understood that I was the boss, our friendship flourished.

Our troubles began when I came back from a vacation and I picked up Betty from the kennel. This was my first experience with kenneling Betty as she usually stays with my Dad.

I felt so guilty dropping her off and leaving her there, even though I trusted the kennel.  Although I was rewarded by kisses upon my return I could see a change in my little girl.

She was timid, tired looking and a bit thin. When I asked about her stay I was told she was not eating much and the other dogs were a bit loud and frightening for her.

My heart dropped. I did this, and for what, a vacation? My dog was clearly traumatized. I wasn’t angry with the kennel, but just super disappointed in myself.

We returned home and I set about putting food and fresh water out for Betty, but there was no interest. Even when her usual dinner time rolled around, she only picked at her food.

This was frustrating as Betty is a picky eater and it took ages to find the right food for her.  My Dad suggested mixing a raw egg in with her kibble. I tried that, and I swear if she could talk she would have said something rude to me!

I removed the offending concoction and gave her some fresh kibble, thinking she would adjust and eat it when she was hungry.

The next morning there were still no takers on the food I put out. I found the leftover bag of food that was with her at the kennel. It was the correct food, but it was expired by 3-months!!!

Sure enough, I took a small whiff of the food to find a rancid oil smell emanating from the bag. Being a vegetarian, I did do a little heave… 😛

So there I am sitting in the kitchen nearly in tears because I felt like I really traumatized Betty through bad food and a kennel stay.

The next day I sped out to the grocery store to pick up a fresh bag of food. Just in case, I also bought a can of wet dog food, praying she would like it and finally get some much needed nutrition.

Finding her regular food (NOT expired) was no problem, but it was a different world when it came to canned food. I had no clue what I was looking at or for! I picked the one with a higher price thinking it equated to quality.

Kibble had always been my go-to since I’m not ‘great’ with the idea of cans of smelly mystery meats or having them in my fridge. I don’t know if you can relate, but for me it was a step I was not eager to take.

I fed Betty dinner that night consisting of kibble with wet food on top. Thankfully Betty ate up the wet food without too much issue but left most of her kibble in her bowl. I remember laughing and rolling my eyes, oh Betty, so silly!

That night before going to bed, I was poking around the internet for solutions to my feeding issues with Betty. This just compounded my anxiety as I was flooded with information, reviews and technical jargon I had no clue about.

That was until I came across this blog article, on Kabo.co that discusses reasons a dog may not be eating. I was relieved to learn that it’s not totally odd for a dog to go off their food- even though I knew what caused Betty’s issue.

We continued the canned food routine for a couple more weeks, but by then the March 2020 lockdown was about to happen, changing all our lives.

Stock at my local supermarket of canned food was looking iffy as everyone was eager to stock up on essentials. My frustration and concern for Betty did not help the situation.

That’s when I started to think about the blog I had read and went back to the source for more advice. As it turned out the source of my information was from a Canadian dog food company.

With further research, I found out that Kabo is a company that offers customized fresh cooked and fresh kibble options- that deliver directly to your door for free!

I’ll admit I was intrigued by the idea of not having to shop for dog food ever again AND feeding Betty food that is actually made to be healthy. So I entered Betty’s information (weight, age, sex, breed, etc..) and was provided with both fresh food and kibble options.

The price was a bit higher than I’d usually pay at the store, but I figured it would be worth a try for Betty. After all, I knew the canned food solution could not be permanent.

I decided to take the plunge and try Kabo fresh food for the next two weeks- I made the order and we patiently waited for our shipment.

When the courier arrived with our first order, I had Betty help me unbox her food. I was so excited to have eat food that’s human-grade, versus the canned mystery meat stuff.

I opened the box and the contents were nice and cold with the insulation and ice packs. The food itself came with instructions on how much to feed Betty from each pack of food. In my case it’s ½ a package twice a day. I was able to pinch out the food without any mess or fuss.

As soon as I set the bowl on the floor and said ‘okay’, Betty did a quick sniff and lick first, then she dug-in and did not stop until the bowl was clean. The look on her face was priceless- like ‘okay- more now hooman’… 😀

I was so relieved, she liked the food!! I ordered two different varieties for her to test. So far the Luscious Lamb was a hit! Tender Chicken was her second option and she had no issues with it either.

Eventually we tried all of the recipes, even their new line of Fresh Kibble. Today Betty’s favorites are Savoury Beef and Tender Chicken.

So, I suppose Betty is not a picky eater, but a discerning eater 😉

We have been with Kabo ever since and today Betty has regained her energy, her coat looks so beautiful and she is back to playing like a pup most days. Kabo also provides a one-on-one call with their in-house veterinarian, Dr. Suzee- I used this perk and learned a ton of useful info about how to care for Betty. The best part- I was reassured that I was doing the right things.

So now, I’m telling everyone I know that has a dog to try Kabo. I’ll even admit I can be a ‘bit much’ when I get talking about Kabo. 🙂 But there is no other product in my life that gives me this kind of satisfaction, and it’s not even for me!!

Kabo has changed meal time forever for Betty, I encourage everyone to experience a direct relationship with Kabo!

My 3 year old Chorkie is such a picky eater. We had tried everything to get her to eat healthy. Then I saw an online ad for Kabo. I had to try something so I signed up. She loves it! At first she seemed sceptical but I kept stirring it up in her bowl and would put some on a spoon to try and she just dove in. She loves the beef. We get our orders promptly on time each month and you can put it on hold or adjust your orders. It’s delivered right to your home!! It’s a great product. It looks and smells like stew. The best thing is….little Gidget eats it right up. THANKS Kabo👍

My Yorkie Lilo has always been a picky eater, but since incorporating Kabo to her daily meals, she has been able to eat regularly and the best part is… I can tell she LOVES every bit of her meals. Since using Kabo regularly, she has increased to a healthier weight. The staff were very helpful with answering my questions regarding increasing her food intake.

My dog was always a picky eater – I’ve tried, kibble, raw, canned, home made… some worked and some didn’t, eventually he’d get bored or just simply dislike it. With KABO he’s always eager to eat!! It’s a miracle, I love to see how happy and hungry he is now. Very very happy!
– Humberly G.

The website/my account is easy to manage and love the reminders. The delivery is right on time and I know exactly when it’s arrived. The food it’s self is great. My fur baby loves it. He’s older and has several health conditions and he loves it. I have always been a firm believer that if I won’t eat it or it is not good for me then why would it be good for my dog!! Love your product!
